The rise of cryptocurrency has been marked by shocking twists and turns, culminating in a year where absurdity became the norm. Launched by the enigmatic Satoshi Nakamoto, cryptocurrency has attracted a diverse following that includes finance enthusiasts, social activists, political dissenters, and even conspiracy theorists. In 2025, the already surreal landscape took a turn for the bizarre, particularly with the launch of a meme coin by then-President Donald Trump just days before his inauguration.

Among the most ludicrous developments was a bizarre new app, introduced in August, which incentivized users to share photographs of their bowel movements for cryptocurrency rewards in the form of Solana-based POOP tokens. The creators claimed their aim was to gather the world’s largest fecal dataset to advance gut health research, although critics were quick to point out the absurdity of monetizing such personal data.

Trump’s foray into the meme coin market was just one facet of the year’s oddities. Following the meme coin’s launch, an anonymous attendee at a dinner held for top holders created another meme coin dubbed “DINNER” from his phone, which floundered shortly after its birth. Meanwhile, a California man initiated a competitive twerking event, allowing viewers to vote and wager via cryptocurrency, transforming a popular social activity into what he hopes to evolve into a legitimate sports league.

Among the year’s more controversial moments was the “Jack Off 500,” an event where college students allegedly raced their sperm while viewers placed bets through a crypto sportsbook. The event gained notoriety not just for its outrageous premise, but also for its reliance on computer-generated visuals rather than actual sperm.

In a more poignant chapter, James Howells, who lost a hard drive containing 8,000 Bitcoin—a fortune eclipsing $774 million—attempted to purchase the landfill where he believed the drive lay buried. His bid was rejected by local authorities, marking a continuation of his decade-long quest to reclaim his lost wealth. Amidst these personal pursuits, a shift to documentary fame awaited him, signaling the ongoing strange intersection of crypto and mainstream culture.

As the cryptocurrency sector sought to carve out niche identities, an influencer known as Buzzlamic Jihad became the face of the Aptos network by skillfully promoting it. His journey from meme-maker to official advisor showcased the blurred lines between social media influence and financial legitimacy.

The year also saw varied attempts to capitalize on the cryptocurrency wave, including a lingerie fighting league launching its own crypto treasury, a decision made amid fears of missing a burgeoning trend.

In Texas, law enforcement garnered headlines for hacking open a Bitcoin ATM to recover funds lost by a family to scammers, further complicating the intersection of legality and cryptocurrency.

Amid the barrage of memes, First Lady Melania Trump entered the fray with her own token, Meteora, embroiled in legal issues that hinted at greater mismanagement and fraudulent undertones within the rapidly expanding meme coin culture.

The absurdities didn’t stop there, as social media feuds, bizarre advertising claims, and uncannily timed publicity stunts kept the crypto community both entertained and astounded. The year concluded with stories that ranged from faked deaths to questionable fundraising efforts, reinforcing the wild unpredictability emblematic of cryptocurrency’s growth into mainstream consciousness.

In summary, 2025 will be remembered as a year that showcased the surreal and often outlandish nature of cryptocurrency narratives, from bowel movement photography to dubious investment schemes, pulling together a patchwork of social commentary, technological innovation, and unabashed absurdity.
