American multinational financial technology company PayPal has unveiled a revolutionary peer-to-peer (P2P) feature named “Links,” which allows users to seamlessly transfer money via a one-time link. This innovative function enables users to drop the link into any conversation, whether it be through text messages, direct messages, or other platforms, streamlining the money transfer process.
In its press release, PayPal underscored that this new P2P flow will also facilitate transactions involving digital assets. Among the supported cryptocurrencies are Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), and PayPal’s own stablecoin, PayPal USD (PYUSD). This integration signifies a significant step for PayPal, expanding its capabilities in the fast-evolving digital finance landscape.
PayPal’s foray into the cryptocurrency sector has been ongoing since its initial launch, which allowed users to buy, hold, and sell Bitcoin along with several altcoins. This feature first became available in the United States and has since expanded globally, reflecting the company’s commitment to enhancing its offerings in cryptocurrencies.
In 2021, PayPal introduced the “Checkout with Crypto” option, enabling merchants to accept digital coins as payment from customers. The same year, the Venmo app also incorporated cryptocurrency functionalities, further broadening access for users looking to engage in crypto transactions.
Continuing its progressive approach, PayPal made headlines in 2022 by permitting users to transfer cryptocurrencies to external wallets, thereby increasing the utility and flexibility of its platform. The following year saw the launch of its regulated stablecoin, PYUSD, which was specifically designed to enhance the transactional capabilities within the PayPal ecosystem.
With the launch of “Links,” PayPal is poised to further enhance user experience, encouraging broader adoption of both P2P money transfers and cryptocurrency transactions. The move showcases PayPal’s commitment to integrating traditional finance with the burgeoning world of digital assets.
