Kevin Durant, the NBA star and two-time champion, has successfully regained access to his Coinbase account after encountering login issues that had puzzled him for some time. The confirmation came from Coinbase in an email to Decrypt on Thursday.

This incident was highlighted during a discussion at CNBC’s Game Plan conference in Los Angeles earlier this week, where Durant’s agent, Rich Kleiman, humorously mentioned the challenge they faced in retrieving the account details. Kleiman elaborated that the account, opened nearly a decade ago, had become a bit of a mystery for Durant.

Durant, who is set to play for the Houston Rockets this upcoming season, has been in a promotional partnership with Coinbase since 2021. Additionally, he and Kleiman have been investors in the cryptocurrency exchange since 2017 through their joint investment fund, 35V. According to Kleiman, he and Durant had been collaborating directly with the Coinbase team to resolve the account recovery issue, which made Kleiman feel comfortable joking about it on stage. He relayed that the trouble was due to a “user error” and emphasized how supportive Coinbase has been over the years.

Durant’s journey into the world of cryptocurrency began in late 2016, influenced by a birthday celebration hosted by Ben Horowitz, co-founder of the venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz. Following extensive discussions about Bitcoin that night, Durant decided to make his first purchase when the cryptocurrency was trading at approximately $600. Currently, Bitcoin is valued at around $117,100, boasting an impressive rise of over 950% in the past five years.

Kleiman recounted his astonishment at Durant’s inability to recall the necessary account information, sharing a light-hearted remark with the conference audience. Nevertheless, he assured them that the account retrieval was a challenge they were determined to overcome.

Durant, now ranked as the seventh leading scorer in NBA history, is part of a growing trend among professional athletes who are investing in Bitcoin and advocating for the broader acceptance of digital assets. Other notable NBA players such as Tristan Thompson and Spencer Dinwiddie have also highlighted their involvement in the cryptocurrency space, with Thompson launching a new Web3 project aimed at enhancing fan interaction with the league.

In this evolving landscape, Durant’s story exemplifies both the challenges and opportunities associated with digital currencies, encouraging a dialogue around the future of cryptocurrency in professional sports.
