PayPal is set to enhance its peer-to-peer (P2P) payments system by integrating cryptocurrencies, a move that will enable U.S. users to send popular digital currencies like Bitcoin, Ethereum, and PayPal USD, among others. This development was announced alongside the launch of a new P2P payments feature called PayPal links, allowing users to request and send payments via one-time links that can be easily shared in messaging threads.
The PayPal links feature is now available for users in the United States and will soon be rolled out in countries such as the U.K. and Italy. According to Diego Scotti, PayPal’s general manager of the consumer group, this initiative represents a significant evolution in how money is exchanged between individuals. “Now your money follows your conversations,” he stated, signaling a streamlined process for managing transactions in digital communications.
Moreover, PayPal links will be integrated with PayPal World, a framework designed for digital asset interoperability. This means that users can send and receive funds not only through PayPal but also across various supported digital wallets globally, potentially enhancing the ease of cryptocurrency transactions.
One of the notable advantages of this expansion is that personal payments made through PayPal and Venmo remain exempt from 1099-K reporting, representing an appealing feature for those looking to engage more deeply with cryptocurrency without tax implications.
In conjunction with these updates, PayPal reported a substantial increase in its P2P payment volumes, which rose by 10% year-on-year in the second quarter. Additionally, Venmo experienced its highest total payment volume growth in three years, showcasing the overall success of the P2P payments sector within the firm.
Prior to the latest announcements, PayPal already facilitated the trading of several cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin and Ethereum, and introduced a “Pay With Crypto” option in July that allows businesses to accept payments in more than 100 cryptocurrencies. The ongoing enhancements position PayPal as a key player in the evolving cryptocurrency landscape, catering to growing demand and user interest in digital assets.
