An increase in food recalls has raised concerns among consumers, as reports of contamination have reported instances of E. coli, metal fragments, and even the discovery of a dead bat in certain food products. This swell in recalls, however alarming, may reflect an enhanced vigilance in food safety practices.

In a recent development, nearly 3,315 pounds of tuna sold at Costco under the Kirkland Signature brand is being recalled due to a potential outbreak of listeria monocytogenes, a bacterium that can lead to severe illness or death. The recall, executed by Western United Fish Company, which operates as Annasea Foods Group, was reported to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) following the identification of the listeria strain in green onions used in their popular Ahi Tuna Wasabi Poke.

The affected tuna, which was sold in Costco’s deli sections, was packaged in clear plastic clamshell containers labeled with the Kirkland Signature brand. The specific product being recalled has a sell-by date of September 22, 2025, and was distributed in numerous states, including Alabama, Florida, Texas, and many more.

The recall was triggered after the agency learned of a positive listeria test from the green onion supplier. The collaboration with the supplier is ongoing to ascertain the source of the contamination. The FDA’s rigorous protocols aim to prevent further health risks to consumers.

Listeria monocytogenes infections can be especially dangerous, presenting a risk of severe conditions, particularly for vulnerable populations such as the elderly, pregnant women, and those with weakened immune systems. Symptoms of listeriosis may include fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, and gastrointestinal issues such as diarrhea. In severe cases, it can lead to miscarriage or life-threatening infections in newborns. Individuals experiencing flu-like symptoms after consuming contaminated food are urged to seek medical attention.

For those who may have purchased the recalled tuna, the FDA advises immediate disposal of the product and encourages consumers to return to Costco for a full refund. Concerned individuals are also directed to reach out to healthcare providers for further guidance regarding potential illness related to the recall.

As authorities continue to monitor food safety standards, the uptick in recalls may be indicative of a more proactive approach to food safety, ensuring that potential hazards are addressed swiftly and effectively. Consumers seeking more information about the recall can contact the company directly.
