Hyperliquid, once the dominant force in the on-chain perpetuals market, is facing increasing competition from newer platforms such as Lighter and Aster. A significant decline in its market share has been noted, dropping from a commanding 71% in May to just 38% currently, as reported by pseudonymous Dune Analytics user @uwusanauwu.
In the same timeframe, Lighter, backed by venture capital giant a16z, has grown its market presence to 16.8%. Similarly, Aster, which is supported by Binance Labs, has climbed to a 14.9% share. These figures stem from analyzing weekly trading volumes, excluding any wash trading, highlighting a real shift in the landscape of the on-chain crypto perpetuals market.
The on-chain perpetuals market facilitates decentralized trading of perpetual futures contracts—derivatives that do not have an expiration date—on a blockchain platform. This structure offers a transparent and immutable way for traders to speculate on price movements in various assets. The contracts are distinguished by a unique funding rate mechanism that helps keep their prices aligned with the spot price of the underlying asset.
The market as a whole has seen considerable growth, with total trading volumes nearing $700 billion over the last month, and yesterday alone witnessing an impressive $42 billion in activity. The number of protocols in this space has surged from a mere two in 2022 to over 80 today. This expansion underscores a highly competitive environment fueled by capitalism, where successful markets attract new participants, leading to a dilution of the early pioneers’ market share and profitability. The crypto landscape’s minimal barriers to entry mean that anyone with adequate technical skills can create new protocols and enter the fray.
Recently, a rivalry has intensified between Hyperliquid and Aster. Hyperliquid began by listing Aster’s native token, ASTR, allowing its users to long or short the token with 3x leverage. In a swift response, Aster called attention to its offerings by providing Hyperliquid’s HYPE perpetuals with a staggering 300x leverage, amping up the competitive stakes in an already dynamic sector.
As the competition heats up, the future of these platforms hangs in precarious balance, with user adoption and innovative offerings likely to dictate the next phase of this evolving market.
