Vitalik Buterin, the founder of Ethereum, has expressed strong support for Coinbase’s Layer-2 network, Base, commending its balanced approach to user experience and security. In a recent statement, Buterin emphasized that Base is leveraging its centralized features to enhance user experience without compromising the decentralized security provided by Ethereum’s underlying infrastructure.

Since its launch in August 2023, Base has made significant strides in the crypto space, now managing approximately $15 billion in assets. Although it once reached a peak of over $16 billion earlier this year, its current valuation reflects a robust user adoption and continuous growth within the ecosystem.

However, the network has faced criticism, particularly regarding its centralized elements. Detractors argue that this centralization introduces risks, including the potential for fund theft. Notably, Justin Bons, founder and CIO of CyberCapital, articulated concerns on social media about the network’s governance, warning that the centralized control could theoretically enable the manipulation or seizure of user funds.

In response to these criticisms, Buterin defended Layer-2 networks, asserting that they function as extensions of Ethereum rather than mere servers. He underscored that Base does not have custody over users’ assets, reinforcing the point that it cannot unilaterally take control of user funds. “The security that L2s provide reflects concrete properties that protect you as a user from being rugged,” he stated, referring to the importance of the underlying Ethereum blockchain in securing Layer-2 operations.

Buterin also referenced L2Beat, an analytics platform that monitors the security and activity levels of Layer-2 networks, to highlight how it plays a role in demonstrating the reliability of Base and similar platforms. He suggested that the metrics from L2Beat are intended to enhance transparency and understanding of the security landscape surrounding these networks.

While Base has been built using the OP Stack, an open-source technology developed by Optimism, the scrutiny over its centralized origins remains a point of contention within the community. Despite this, Buterin’s endorsement reflects a growing confidence in Layer-2 solutions as viable alternatives within the Ethereum ecosystem, aiming to improve transaction efficiency without sacrificing security.
