Walmart has taken a significant step in enhancing the shopping experience by partnering with OpenAI, enabling customers to purchase products directly through ChatGPT. This innovative collaboration introduces a feature called Instant Checkout, designed to streamline the eCommerce process for Walmart and Sam’s Club shoppers.
With this new development, customers can engage in a conversational manner to express their shopping needs, while ChatGPT facilitates the purchase process. According to OpenAI, this function acts like a “digital personal shopper,” managing everything from placing orders to processing payments and fulfilling deliveries directly through the retailer.
“The landscape of eCommerce shopping is evolving,” stated Doug McMillon, Walmart’s president and CEO. He emphasized that the traditional shopping model, which often revolves around a simple search bar and a list of items, is being transformed into a more engaging, multimedia, and personalized experience thanks to AI technology.
The rise of artificial intelligence in retail is not unique to Walmart. Other companies, such as Amazon, have also introduced AI-driven solutions like the Rufus personal shopper chatbot. However, Walmart’s venture into what it terms “agentic commerce” distinguishes it by using AI to anticipate customer needs rather than merely responding to queries. This technology aims to assist consumers with various tasks, including meal planning and efficiently restocking everyday household items.
Walmart has been actively incorporating AI across its operations, with initiatives that have notably accelerated product catalog updates and improved customer service efficiency. Reports indicate that AI integration has successfully shortened fashion production timelines by as much as 18 weeks and reduced customer care resolution times by nearly 40%.
As for the availability of the Instant Checkout feature, the companies have yet to reveal specific launch dates. However, sources indicate that it is expected to become available to customers in the upcoming fall season, followed shortly by the inclusion of Sam’s Club products.
