History is undergoing a transformation at the White House, as the construction of a new formal ballroom takes place on the grounds, replacing the historic East Wing. This project has ignited significant political debate and is casting a spotlight on President Donald Trump’s influence on the iconic residence.
Traditionally, while the White House has played host to numerous ceremonial events, it has never boasted a dedicated ballroom. The new structure, estimated to cost around $250 million, aims to fill this void, providing a space specifically designed for large-scale gatherings. Funding for the ballroom will come from President Trump himself, alongside contributions from private donors, although a detailed disclosure of these funding sources has yet to be released.
During a briefing on July 31, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt unveiled details of the ambitious project. She described the ballroom as a 90,000-square-foot addition that would accommodate approximately 650 seated guests. Leavitt emphasized that the design would reflect the classical aesthetics of the White House. “The White House is currently unable to host major functions honoring world leaders in other countries without having to install a large and unsightly tent approximately 100 yards away from the main building’s entrance,” she explained, indicating that this new ballroom would be a “much-needed and exquisite addition.”
Illustrations from McCrery Architects have been shared, offering a glimpse into the envisioned exterior of the ballroom, which is expected to harmonize with the historical architecture of the surrounding buildings.
