Northern Light Health, Anthem Fail to Reach Contract Agreement, Patients Remain In-Network

Negotiations between Northern Light Health and Anthem Insurance have yet to yield a new contractual agreement, missing a critical deadline despite extended talks lasting several months. As of early Saturday, Northern Light’s President and CEO, Dr. R. Guy Hudson, confirmed that while a new contract has not been finalized, patients insured by Anthem will continue to be treated at in-network rates.

Hudson reassured Anthem customers that their access to care at Northern Light Health would remain uninterrupted. “I personally want to reassure our patients who are Anthem customers that they can continue to receive care with Northern Light Health without disruption while these negotiations continue,” he emphasized, stating that patients would not be classified as out of network during this period.

The negotiations have primarily focused on reimbursement rates, with both parties initially aiming for a new contract by October 1. This deadline was later extended to October 31. If no agreement is reached, around 30,000 Anthem customers could be affected, seeing their local primary care physicians, specialists, and outpatient facilities become out-of-network.

According to state officials, Maine’s insurance regulations provide certain legal safeguards to residents, implying that patients would still have access to necessary medical services even if they are faced with out-of-network providers. Notably, the state’s insurance code mandates that health plans guarantee “reasonable access” to care, although the term’s definition remains ambiguous. Patients undergoing ongoing treatments are also granted continuity-of-care protections, allowing them to continue care with an out-of-network provider without incurring higher out-of-pocket costs. Bob Carey, superintendent of the Maine Bureau of Insurance, stressed this aspect, highlighting scenarios like ongoing cancer treatment or nearing delivery for expectant mothers, assuring that they would not be forced to change their providers mid-treatment.

The immediate implications of the missed deadline pertain particularly to outpatient services provided by Northern Light for Anthem individual or employer-sponsored plans. However, Anthem’s Medicare coverage for Northern Light patients will remain valid until the end of the year, and emergency services will continue to be covered under federal law.

Looking ahead, another crucial deadline looms on December 31. Should negotiations fail to produce an agreement by that date, Northern Light’s hospitals and inpatient services may also be rendered out-of-network. Carey reassured that patients admitted to Northern Light hospitals would be treated at in-network rates, even if a new contract isn’t in place.

In light of these developments, Anthem has established a dedicated website to keep its customers informed and offer guidance. The Maine Bureau of Insurance has also advised patients to contact the number on their insurance cards prior to visiting any Northern Light provider to confirm their coverage status and associated costs.
