In a recent development, Google has turned down Disney’s request to temporarily reinstate ABC on its streaming platform, YouTube TV, for Election Day. However, the tech giant has put forth a counteroffer that may excite sports enthusiasts nationwide.

Google suggested that instead of just ABC, Disney should restore access to ESPN networks on YouTube TV while negotiations continue for a new contract. The company assured Disney that if they agree to the proposal, the channels could be back online “within hours.”

In an email sent to Disney, Google emphasized the importance of customer satisfaction, noting that ongoing content disputes lead to confusion among viewers. “Customers don’t want companies fighting and content blackouts,” Google stated, adding that Disney’s initial proposal to restore ABC only for a single day would likely perplex users who might see it return briefly only to lose access again shortly afterward.

To address this, Google proposed a more comprehensive solution: restoring both ABC and ESPN channels for the duration of the negotiations. “Those are the channels that people want,” Google wrote, urging Disney to consider a more customer-friendly approach.

This disagreement between Google and Disney has resulted in YouTube TV users losing access to multiple ESPN channels, including ESPN, ESPN2, and specialized networks such as SEC Network and ACC Network. As a result, college football fans found themselves scrambling for alternative viewing options for Saturday games. Likewise, viewers hoping to catch the Monday Night Football matchup between the Dallas Cowboys and Arizona Cardinals were similarly out of luck, as the event was aired on ESPN.

This marks another chapter in YouTube TV’s series of negotiations with major media companies, having recently secured agreements with FOX and NBC to avoid blackouts earlier this year.

Should Disney accept Google’s proposal, it remains to be seen whether all ESPN channels would be reinstated or just the primary networks. While the timeline for a complete resolution is uncertain, this proposed collaboration could represent a significant step forward in the ongoing negotiations between the two media giants.
