Veterans Day is set to take place on Tuesday, November 11, 2025, prompting questions about the operational status of the stock and bond markets on this significant federal holiday. While many government offices and federal institutions will close, the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and Nasdaq will remain open for trading.
Veterans Day has a rich history, originally established in 1918 as Armistice Day to commemorate the end of World War I. Over the years, it has evolved into a day to honor all U.S. veterans and active-duty military members who have served the nation. Despite being a federal holiday, the stock markets will operate as usual, much to the benefit of traders and investors.
In contrast, the bond market will observe Veterans Day as a holiday, shutting down operations for the day. According to the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association (SIFMA), the bond market follows a distinct holiday calendar, and physical trading floors as well as over-the-counter operations will be closed.
As for other sectors, federal offices not affected by any ongoing government shutdown will be closed, while banks, post offices, and schools will also take the day off. Most restaurants, retailers, and grocery stores, however, are likely to remain operational.
The NYSE and Nasdaq observe a total of ten holiday closures throughout the year, including major holidays such as Thanksgiving and Christmas. They also have early closings on events like Black Friday and Christmas Eve. The next upcoming holiday for these markets will be Thanksgiving Day on November 27, 2025.
Additionally, commodity futures markets, such as the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) and Intercontinental Exchange (ICE), will operate on modified schedules on Veterans Day, so it’s advisable for participants to check for specific early closure times for various commodities.
As traders prepare for this year’s Veterans Day, the operational status of these financial markets is clear: stock trading will continue as planned, while the bond market takes a day of remembrance.
