Veterans Day is recognized annually to honor the millions of Americans who have served in the military. The observance traces its origins to 1919, when President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed November 11 as the first Armistice Day, marking the end of World War I. However, in 1956, Congress officially renamed it Veterans Day to honor all U.S. military veterans.

As a federal holiday, many Americans are curious about the operating hours of various businesses and services. On Veterans Day, most bank branches are expected to remain closed, as it is designated a holiday by the Federal Reserve. However, ATMs will still be operational for those needing access to cash.

In contrast to banks, U.S. financial markets will remain open on Veterans Day. Both the Nasdaq and the New York Stock Exchange do not recognize the day as a holiday, with the markets set to close next on Thanksgiving Day, which falls on November 27 this year. It’s worth noting that bond trading will be paused for the day, as indicated by the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association.

For those who need shopping options, Costco will keep its doors open, as it does not include Veterans Day among its holiday closures. Moreover, FedEx and UPS will continue their retail and shipping services as usual on November 11. The U.S. Postal Service, however, will observe Veterans Day with closures in place, delivering only Priority Mail Express while other mail services will be suspended.

When it comes to retail hours, most grocery stores and fast-food chains will also operate normally, although it is advisable for customers to confirm specific hours with local establishments. Notable retailers remaining open on this Veterans Day include Aldi, Dunkin’, Home Depot, IHOP, KFC, Kroger, McDonald’s, Petco, Sonic, Wegmans, and Wendy’s.

In acknowledgment of the sacrifices made by veterans, many businesses provide discounts and special offers to both veterans and their families on this day. The American Legion, a veterans organization with over 1.6 million members, has compiled an extensive list of restaurants, retailers, and other establishments offering deals on November 11. This initiative serves to honor the contributions of those who have served and to thank them for their commitment to the nation.
