A local retail store in Manhattan has suffered a significant financial loss due to a bitcoin scam that occurred Thursday afternoon. The incident took place at the Burlington Coat Factory, located at 425 3rd Place, and was reported to authorities around 3:09 p.m.

According to the Riley County police, an unidentified male contacted the store via phone, guiding the staff to withdraw money from the cash register and deposit it into a nearby bitcoin machine. This scheme led to the store losing a total of $1,740.

Law enforcement officials have not made any arrests related to this incident at this time. The police are urging anyone who may have information about the scam or the caller to reach out to Manhattan Riley County Crime Stoppers at 785-539-7777.

As this case unfolds, the community is reminded to exercise caution regarding unsolicited calls and online transactions involving cryptocurrencies, which can often be exploited for scams.
