Airbus has taken the unprecedented step of issuing a global alert to operators of A320-family aircraft, urging immediate action to rectify a critical software issue that poses a risk to flight-control systems on thousands of aircraft. The directive, which went into effect on Saturday evening (US Eastern time), stems from Airbus’s assessment that “intense solar radiation can corrupt data vital for the operation of flight controls.”
This urgent warning comes in the wake of an incident involving a JetBlue A320 on October 30, during which the aircraft “unexpectedly pitched downward without pilot input,” necessitating an emergency diversion and resulting in multiple passenger injuries.
In India alone, over 350 A320-family aircraft operated by IndiGo and the Air India group are set to be grounded for the necessary fixes. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has mandated that all affected jets undergo inspection and/or modification. The anticipated duration for these upgrades is between two to three days, with normal operations expected to resume by Monday or Tuesday.
Globally, the software flaw affects approximately 6,000 aircraft within the A320 family, though not every aircraft is impacted. Many can be swiftly repaired by reverting to a previous software version. However, around 1,000 older planes will need more extensive hardware changes, prolonging the repair time.
The grounding order is significant as it impacts a large portion of the global commercial aircraft fleet, where Airbus and Boeing together account for over 75%. Consequently, the repercussions of this situation are likely to be felt in air traffic worldwide.
The imperative behind this emergency directive arises from the October incident involving JetBlue, where the aircraft experienced an unauthorized altitude drop, reportedly due to a malfunction during an ELAC (flight control computer) switch change. This triggered an investigation by both the Federal Aviation Administration and the US National Transportation Safety Board.
Airbus disclosed that recent investigations demonstrated how solar flares could disrupt critical flight-control data. The investigation specifically highlighted vulnerabilities in ELAC B hardware running software version L104, which may be susceptible to interference from intense solar activity. Such disruptions could lead to unintended movements in the aircraft’s control surfaces, potentially exceeding structural limits.
The implications of solar radiation in aviation are significant. Solar flares and coronal mass ejections release energetic particles that can interfere with an aircraft’s electronic systems, affecting navigation, communication, and flight-control data integrity.
As airlines worldwide brace for disruptions, the extent of the recall has raised concerns, especially as it coincides with one of the busiest travel weekends in the United States. Reports are emerging of delays, with airlines like Finnair and American Airlines noting that aircraft software versions are being verified to ensure compliance. American Airlines has identified approximately 340 of its 480 jets for the required updates, while Delta anticipates minor impacts with fewer than 50 A321neos requiring fixes.
Colombian airline Avianca has halted ticket sales for affected flights, while others, including Air France and Air New Zealand, are facing cancellations and delays. The European Union’s aviation regulator, EASA, has instructed operators to implement the fixes before their next flights, emphasizing that safety remains the highest priority.
Despite the crunch, airlines are expected to complete the required updates during overnight maintenance or the intervals between scheduled flights, although maintenance facilities are currently overwhelmed due to ongoing repairs from other previously reported issues. The update generally takes around two hours for each aircraft but may face delays as additional hardware modifications are needed for older planes.
This major software recall is notably one of the largest in Airbus’s history and comes at an inconvenient time for the travel industry.
