The ZKsync team has announced that ZKsync Lite, formerly known as ZKsync 1.0, will officially retire by 2026. This decision marks the culmination of a project that began in June 2020 and has since become a significant component of the Ethereum ecosystem. The retirement plan is designed with care, ensuring the safety of current assets and maintaining uninterrupted Layer-1 withdrawals for users.

Since its launch, ZKsync Lite has distinguished itself as a pioneering rollup system utilizing zero-knowledge proofs, effectively addressing the dual challenges of scalability and security. The platform has served as a critical testing ground for users and developers, showcasing the capabilities of ZK technology and infrastructure over the years.

Currently, approximately $50 million in assets remain on the ZKsync Lite network. Users are reassured that no immediate actions are required on their part, as all existing functions will continue to operate as normal. The ZKsync team plans to unveil a detailed transition plan, including timelines and a user guide, by 2026 to facilitate a smooth shift away from the Lite network.

As ZKsync looks to the future, the focus will shift towards the development of the ZK Stack infrastructure and Prividium systems. These initiatives are designed to empower developers by enabling them to create their own zero-knowledge rollup blockchains, thereby fostering greater interoperability within the ecosystem. The ZKsync team believes this evolution is a crucial step towards the broader adoption of zero-knowledge technologies.

An official statement from the team emphasized, “ZKsync Lite was just the beginning; systems like ZK Stack and the ZKsync network will guide the future.” As further developments unfold, users can expect specific details about timelines and technical steps to be disclosed starting next year, ensuring ongoing support throughout this evolution.
