Reddit is currently experiencing a significant outage impacting hundreds of users worldwide, as reported by outage tracking platform Downdetector. The website has registered over 250 complaints regarding various issues with the platform, with the number of complaints peaking around 3:55 PM.
Analysis of the reported problems indicates that 48% of users experienced difficulties with the Reddit website itself, 42% faced issues with the mobile app, and 10% reported server connection problems. Interestingly, despite these user complaints, Reddit’s official status page claims that there are no ongoing issues affecting either the website or the app.
This recent disruption is not an isolated event, as numerous outages have occurred across various internet services in the past few months. However, the current situation does not appear to be part of a larger trend of widespread disruptions.
In recent incidents, other major platforms have encountered outages. Notably, Cloudflare, a critical infrastructure provider for many websites, faced issues that resulted in downtime for various services. A significant outage on December 5 caused platforms such as Zerodha, Angel One, and Groww to go offline, presenting users with a ‘500 Internal Server Error’ message. Additionally, Cloudflare experienced another outage last month, impacting services like X, Perplexity, ChatGPT, and Anthropic.
Furthermore, a major outage from Amazon Web Services (AWS) recently affected users across more than 60 countries for over 15 hours, targeting popular platforms including Snapchat, Reddit, Slack, and others. In October, issues with Microsoft Teams and Microsoft 365 resulted in an extensive eight-hour outage, disrupting the workflow of numerous businesses and users across platforms like Outlook, Azure, and Xbox Live.
Despite these challenges, it remains to be seen how Reddit will resolve the current issue and whether it will manage to restore full functionality promptly for its users.
