Cowboys Coach Discusses George Pickens’ Response to Richard Sherman’s Criticism

In a recent update from the Dallas Cowboys’ training facility, head coach Brian Schottenheimer addressed the ongoing discussions surrounding wide receiver George Pickens following a challenging loss to the Detroit Lions. The loss marked a tough outing for the Cowboys, particularly for Pickens, who faced criticism from Prime Video analyst Richard Sherman for what was perceived as a lack of effort during the game.

Schottenheimer emphasized that he had a constructive dialogue with Pickens regarding Sherman’s remarks. In their conversation, Pickens acknowledged his performance, stating, “Hey Schotty, I didn’t play my best game.” Schottenheimer echoed this sentiment, admitting that the team overall did not perform to their potential in the 44-30 defeat. He commented on the nature of the game, noting, “We didn’t coach or play well enough to win that game in Detroit. They beat us. It is what it is.”

Sherman, a former All-Pro cornerback, critiqued Pickens’ demeanor throughout the game, suggesting he appeared “uninterested” and “disengaged.” During this matchup, Pickens managed to catch five passes for a modest total of 37 yards, which was particularly disappointing as it marked the first time this season that he did not register a catch exceeding 10 yards.

In response to Sherman’s comments, Pickens took to social media with a now-deleted post expressing his discontent, directing a sharp rebuttal at Sherman. Schottenheimer did not contest Pickens’ effort level during the game but noted that the Lions had focused on defending him, especially after the injury of fellow wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, who left the game with a concussion in the third quarter.

While the details of Schottenheimer’s conversation with Pickens remain private, he acknowledged that he talks about various subjects with the young receiver. “I love watching the guy play football,” he said, adding that Pickens demonstrates a passion for the game that is evident to those around him. Schottenheimer’s belief in Pickens’ ability to significantly influence games remains unwavering.

In a positive development, Schottenheimer provided an encouraging update on Lamb’s recovery, indicating that the receiver was progressing well while still in concussion protocol. Lamb was spotted in the locker room during media availability, a reassuring sign for Cowboys fans as the team prepares for their upcoming game against the Minnesota Vikings. “He’s doing good. He’s progressing nicely,” Schottenheimer reported, expressing hope for Lamb’s timely return to the field. The Cowboys will commence their preparations for the matchup on Wednesday, seeking to bounce back after their recent loss.
