Freezing Rain and Snow Flurries Prompt Delayed Opening for Wake County Facilities

Freezing rain and light snow are currently affecting Wake County, leading to concerns about hazardous road conditions as temperatures are projected to dip below freezing overnight. In light of this weather forecast, Wake County officials have announced a delay in the opening of all non-essential services until 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 9. This decision is aimed at ensuring the safety of both employees and residents as icy conditions are expected to persist through the morning commute.

Essential personnel, including law enforcement, emergency medical services, and other first responders, will continue their operations without interruption to ensure public safety during this weather event.

Residents are being urged to prioritize safety during these wintry conditions. Those who can avoid driving are encouraged to do so, while those who must travel should exercise extreme caution. Maintaining a safe distance from other vehicles is crucial as roads may be slippery.

To keep warm during these frigid temperatures, individuals are advised to dress in layers. It is also important to adhere to safety guidelines when using heating sources, such as fireplaces or space heaters, by keeping flammable objects at least three feet away from any heat source. Additionally, it is critical to avoid using generators or charcoal-burning grills indoors to prevent the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.

Residents are encouraged to prepare for potential power outages by assembling an emergency kit that includes water, non-perishable food, blankets, flashlights, batteries, and any essential medications.

For ongoing updates regarding the weather and related services, residents can visit the Wake County website at wake.gov/weather. Those interested in timely alerts can subscribe to personalized ReadyWake notifications to stay informed about any developments.
