Breakout star Marcello Hernández, known for his stint on “Saturday Night Live,” is set to launch his first stand-up comedy special on Netflix, titled “American Boy.” The hour-long special, which is scheduled to stream on January 7, was filmed before a live audience in Miami, Hernández’s hometown.
The special features Hernández reflecting on the nuances of growing up as a first-generation American, drawing from his personal experiences to connect with viewers. Directed by Nicholaus Goossen, “American Boy” is produced by Rotten Science, with Hernández himself serving as an executive producer alongside Matthew Vaughan.
At just 28 years old, Hernández made waves after joining “SNL” in 2022, quickly becoming one of the rising stars of the iconic NBC sketch comedy series. He gained notoriety for his role as Domingo in popular musical sketches that depict a bride-to-be’s complicated love life. Additionally, his impersonation of comedian Sebastian Maniscalco garnered praise from the original performer, showcasing Hernández’s versatility and comedic range. He frequently embodies characters that reflect his Cuban and Dominican heritage, adding a rich cultural layer to his performances.
His on-screen presence extends beyond “SNL.” Hernández portrayed a Miami nightclub promoter who guided a dim-witted bouncer, played by Jason Momoa, and took on the role of a son to a protective mother, portrayed by Pedro Pascal.
Recently, Hernández appeared in “Happy Gilmore 2” alongside Adam Sandler and took part in the Michelle Williams-led miniseries “Dying for Sex.” Upcoming projects include voice roles in animated films “Shrek 5” and “The Angry Birds Movie 3,” as well as a part in the comedic feature “72 Hours,” starring Teyana Taylor and Kevin Hart.
In 2024, Hernández was recognized as one of Variety’s Power of Young Hollywood cover stars. The comedian cites inspirations such as Steve Harvey, Cedric the Entertainer, Kevin Hart, and Bernie Mac, expressing a desire to achieve similar success while hoping to represent his Hispanic heritage.
