Raging flames engulfed a six-story apartment building on Manhattan’s Upper West Side on Tuesday morning, creating a scene of chaos as debris rained down onto the street and thick smoke filled the area. The fire erupted around 8:20 a.m. at a building located on 107th Street and Amsterdam Avenue, quickly escalating to a fourth alarm shortly after 9 a.m., drawing a significant response from the Fire Department of New York (FDNY).
As emergency crews arrived, aerial footage from Chopper 4 revealed that the entire top floor of the building was consumed by flames, with thick black smoke pouring out from under the rooftops. Firefighters battled the blaze, attempting to suppress it from the sides as flames advanced toward them. The situation intensified as part of the building’s left side collapsed, sending flaming debris raining down onto the sidewalk. A large fragment fell dangerously close to a fire engine that was on the scene, underscoring the perilous conditions faced by the emergency responders.
The apartment building is believed to contain approximately 40 residential units, and although firefighters have been actively working to control the fire, there was no immediate information available regarding potential injuries or the cause of the blaze. Residents in the vicinity were urged to stay away from the area and advised to close their windows, as the smoke billowed through the cityscape, creating a health hazard.
The situation is developing, and authorities continue to work diligently to manage the fire and ensure the safety of residents and bystanders alike. Further updates are expected as the FDNY continues its operations at the scene.
