Blue Jays Face Potential Loss of Chris Bassitt as Brewers Eye Free Agency Deal

The Toronto Blue Jays fell just shy of securing the World Series title, finishing as runners-up to the Los Angeles Dodgers in a thrilling seven-game series. This near-miss has prompted the Blue Jays to adopt an aggressive approach as they navigate the offseason, particularly in free agency.

To bolster their roster, the Blue Jays made a significant move by signing pitcher Dylan Cease to a lucrative contract. However, this acquisition raises questions about the future of veteran pitcher Chris Bassitt, who has been a pivotal part of the team’s recent success.

Joey Peterson from Just Baseball speculated that Bassitt might be on his way out, potentially signing with the Milwaukee Brewers this offseason. Reports indicate that Bassitt could command a $45 million deal, as suggested by Jim Bowden of The Athletic. Peterson highlighted Bassitt’s experience, referencing his crucial contributions during Toronto’s postseason journey. Although he transitioned to a bullpen role as October progressed, he played an integral part in several high-stakes situations.

Bassitt’s durability is particularly appealing to potential suitors. Over the past four seasons, he has consistently made at least 30 starts and logged a minimum of 170 innings each year, even surpassing 200 innings in 2023. This track record positions him as a reliable option for teams seeking to enhance their pitching depth.

The Brewers could find themselves in need of a starter, especially if they decide to trade Freddy Peralta this winter. Should that occur, Bassitt would be a logical replacement, providing an affordable and consistent solution for their rotation. With expectations of a contract in the vicinity of $20 million per year, Bassitt could offer Milwaukee the stability they require.

The offseason promises to be an intriguing period for both the Blue Jays and the Brewers as they strategize to improve their respective rosters and set the stage for the upcoming season.
