The Indianapolis Colts are opting to stick with Daniel Jones at quarterback, despite the player battling through a left fibula fracture over the past two games. The decision comes amid a limited pool of alternatives to choose from, especially with their promising rookie, Anthony Richardson, still sidelined due to a significant injury.
Richardson, the fourth overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, remains on injured reserve following an orbital fracture sustained during a pregame warm-up incident last month. Coach Shane Steichen provided updates on Richardson’s recovery, noting that while he has not yet been cleared for full football activities, there is optimism regarding his potential return this season.
The injury initially raised alarms due to concerns about Richardson’s vision, which was compromised by swelling and required surgery. Sources reveal that Richardson experienced temporary blurriness in one eye, a troubling aftermath of the traumatic event. Thankfully, doctors confirmed that he has avoided serious damage to his eye. Steichen highlighted the importance of ensuring that Richardson has regained full vision before he can return to the field.
In recent developments, Richardson has begun engaging in lighter training routines in the weight room and has increased his presence at the team facility after being advised to rest. His gradual return to team activities includes attending recent games, suggesting his recovery is progressing well. He may even join the traveling squad for upcoming road games.
The injury incident occurred in an unusual manner: while using an elastic stretch band, the bar to which it was attached broke, striking Richardson in the face. This freak accident has sidelined one of the team’s key players, leaving Jones as the mainstay at quarterback.
Jones, who was named the starting quarterback after competing with Richardson during the preseason, now faces the challenge of leading the Colts through this injury-riddled phase. With rookie Riley Leonard serving as the backup—having yet to attempt a regular-season pass—the Colts’ quarterback situation remains tenuous while they await Richardson’s recovery and potential return to action.
