In a significant move for the Texas A&M soccer program, Bobby Shuttleworth has been appointed as the new head coach, following an announcement by Director of Athletics Trev Alberts. Shuttleworth, a celebrated figure in collegiate soccer, brings with him a wealth of experience as both a player and coach, having contributed to two national championships during his tenure at Florida State University.
Alberts expressed enthusiasm about Shuttleworth’s appointment, highlighting his proven record in developing high-level talent and his strong leadership qualities. “We are confident Bobby will elevate our program while supporting our student-athletes both athletically and academically,” Alberts stated.
In response, Shuttleworth conveyed his excitement and gratitude for the opportunity to lead Texas A&M’s program. He acknowledged the rich history of Texas A&M soccer and its commitment to excellence. “It is an honor to be entrusted with leading such a respected program,” he said, expressing eagerness to foster the legacy of the university and support the community.
Shuttleworth’s transition to Texas A&M comes just a day after he celebrated Florida State’s national championship victory against Stanford, a game marked by his goalkeeping mentee’s impressive performance. During his four-season stint at Florida State, the Seminoles achieved a remarkable 70-7-12 record, boasting the nation’s best winning percentage at .854.
Notably, Shuttleworth’s tenure saw the team reach unprecedented heights, including an undefeated season and accolades such as the United Soccer Coaches National Coaching Staff of the Year in 2023. His strategic focus on team development paid off during the NCAA Tournament, where Florida State posted a 17-1-1 record under his guidance.
Before his coaching achievements, Shuttleworth enjoyed a notable 14-year career in Major League Soccer (MLS), where he racked up 232 matches played. He was known for his skillful performances with teams like New England Revolution and Minnesota United FC, wrapping up his playing career with 81 wins and 53 clean sheets. His foundation in coaching began while at New England, where he served as an assistant coach for the men’s team at Bentley University.
As he assumes leadership of one of the most storied programs in collegiate soccer, Shuttleworth is determined to uphold Texas A&M’s impressive legacy, which includes being the only SEC team and the sole representative from Texas to reach the milestone of 500 wins. “We will strive to develop top-level players while also helping them grow as students, leaders, teammates, and individuals of high character,” he asserted.
A proud alumnus of the University at Buffalo, Shuttleworth holds the distinction of being the school’s all-time leader in goals against average and accrued 21 victories during his playing career. He completed his undergraduate studies with a degree in business administration.
With Shuttleworth at the helm, Texas A&M soccer aims to continue its pursuit of championships and excellence, both on and off the field, in the upcoming seasons.
