The New York Knicks faced a challenging Sunday afternoon as they secured a hard-fought 106-100 victory against the Orlando Magic at Madison Square Garden, but not without complications to their roster. Just when it seemed the team was regaining its full strength, they found themselves again short-handed due to injuries.
Karl-Anthony Towns sat out the game due to tightness in his left calf, an issue that arose during a recent matchup against the Utah Jazz on Friday. During that game, Towns visibly struggled and received treatment from trainers while on the bench, ultimately leading to his absence against the Magic.
In addition to Towns’ setback, guard Miles McBride suffered a left ankle injury in the third quarter. After making a strong move for a layup late in the period, McBride was fouled and went down hard. Though he managed to stay on the court long enough to shoot free throws, he soon signaled to the bench for a substitution and did not return to the game. Head coach Mike Brown provided minimal details on McBride’s condition, indicating he was still undergoing evaluation and that further updates would come on Monday.
On a slightly brighter note, OG Anunoby made his return to the court after missing nine games due to a left hamstring strain. His comeback allowed Coach Brown to field an anticipated starting lineup featuring Jalen Brunson, Mikal Bridges, Anunoby, Josh Hart, and Towns. This lineup mirrors the one utilized by former head coach Tom Thibodeau last season and is expected to be the foundation for Brown moving forward.
However, with Towns sidelined, Brown was forced to adjust his lineup yet again, inserting Mitchell Robinson to take his place. Robinson, who had started the season as a regular fixture in the lineup, had seen his role shift as the coaching staff looked to manage his minutes due to previous injury concerns. He logged a season-high 25 minutes against the Magic, contributing six points and an impressive 13 rebounds, with eight of those coming offensively.
McBride, who had been enjoying a productive stretch prior to his injury, struggled in the game, missing all five of his attempts from beyond the arc before exiting. The team is now left hoping for swift recoveries for both Towns and McBride as they navigate the coming days.
