Brandon Noel's 29 Points Lead Ohio State Past Northwestern in Big Ten Opener

In a thrilling Big Ten opener, Ohio State triumphed over Northwestern with a final score of 86-82 on Saturday, showcasing an impressive performance, particularly from standout player Brandon Noel. Noel delivered an exceptional game, scoring 29 points while shooting an impressive 13-for-15 from the field.

The game took a decisive turn in the second half when Ohio State (record now at 7-1, 1-0 in Big Ten play) launched an 18-7 run, taking a narrow 64-61 lead with 8:41 remaining on the clock. However, Northwestern’s Arrinten Page quickly responded, sinking a crucial 3-pointer to tie the game shortly after.

Noel then took charge, scoring the next four points through a combination of two free throws and a layup, helping the Buckeyes regain momentum. Ohio State managed to extend its lead to 81-73 with just 2:10 left in the contest. As the final moments approached, Northwestern reduced the deficit to just one point at 82-81, capitalizing on the urgency of the situation with only 21 seconds remaining. Despite their efforts, Ohio State secured the victory by converting crucial free throws in the closing seconds.

In addition to Noel’s outstanding performance, Bruce Thornton contributed significantly with 17 points and 10 assists, while Amare Bynum added 11 points and Devin Royal chipped in with 10. Ohio State’s overall shooting was impressive, as the team achieved a 57% success rate, hitting 35 of 61 attempts from the floor.

On the other hand, Nick Martinelli shone for Northwestern (5-4, 0-2), scoring 32 points along with eight rebounds and four assists, while Angelo Ciaravino contributed 14 points and Arrinten Page finished with 13. Martinelli’s first-half performance was particularly noteworthy, as he amassed 18 points and secured six rebounds, laying the groundwork for Northwestern’s early 44-40 lead.

Looking ahead, Ohio State will host No. 14 Illinois State on Tuesday, marking another pivotal game in their season. Meanwhile, Northwestern is set to face Jackson State at home next Saturday.
