Jeremy O. Harris Released from Japanese Custody After Drug Smuggling Arrest

American playwright and actor Jeremy O. Harris has been released from custody in Japan after being arrested on suspicion of drug smuggling. His arrest occurred on November 16 at Naha Airport, where customs officers allegedly found a small quantity of a substance containing the stimulant MDMA in his carry-on luggage. The incident has garnered attention due to Japan’s strict drug laws, which can lead to severe penalties for possession offenses.

According to an official from the Okinawa police, Harris, 36, was released on December 8 as the case was forwarded to the Naha District Public Prosecutors Office for further investigation. The police have not disclosed whether Harris has officially been charged with any crime. Authorities typically maintain a high conviction rate in drug-related cases, adding to the uncertainty surrounding Harris’s situation.

When contacted by the New York Times, a spokesperson for the Tomishiro police station opted not to comment on any charges against Harris. Similarly, a spokesperson from the prosecutors’ office also refrained from providing details about the case to AFP.

While it remains unclear if he is permitted to leave Japan during the ongoing investigation, Harris’s representative confirmed to the New York Times that he had been released without charges. The representative also noted that Harris intends to remain in Japan to work on writing and research for an upcoming project.

Harris arrived in Japan after a flight from Britain with a layover in Taiwan, reportedly visiting for tourism. He is best known for his Tony-nominated play “Slave Play,” which made headlines in 2018 by earning a record 12 Tony nominations, although it did not win any awards. In addition to his work in theater, Harris is a co-producer of HBO’s acclaimed series “Euphoria.” The circumstances of his recent arrest have sparked discussions about artistic freedom and the complexities of international travel amid stringent laws.
