NORTH CHARLESTON — Traffic disruptions plagued the Don Holt and Cosgrove Avenue bridges the morning of December 10 due to hazardous icy conditions, multiple agencies confirmed. As of 7:30 a.m., all lanes of Interstate 526 past exit 23 for Clements Ferry Road were completely closed in both directions, attributed to collisions and slick roadways, according to live traffic updates from the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT).
The critical roadway, which connects Daniel Island to North Charleston, saw no vehicles on it shortly before 8 a.m. as police agencies implemented a full shutdown of the bridge. Traffic cameras from the DOT indicated a total halt, prompting officials to redirect eastbound traffic from I-526 at exit 20 for Virginia Avenue. Meanwhile, the westbound lanes near Clements Ferry Road were gridlocked as drivers remained at a standstill.
Simultaneously, Cosgrove Avenue faced similar challenges. Shortly after 7:30 a.m., multiple accidents led to a complete closure of both travel directions at the bridge connecting North Charleston to West Ashley. Authorities attributed the surge in traffic incidents to an ice accumulation that formed overnight and persisted into the morning hours.
The Charleston Police Department urged motorists to exercise extreme caution while driving, particularly on bridges. Officers were deployed near the Don Holt and Cosgrove bridges to assist with accidents and manage the situation. The department emphasized the importance of slowing down and increasing following distances to ensure driver safety.
In addition, the North Charleston Police Department issued a cautionary message through the agency’s CrimeWatch platform, highlighting that dense fog across the roadways added an extra layer of danger for motorists.
The National Weather Service also issued a freezing fog advisory early on December 10, warning of low visibility and hazardous driving conditions anticipated to last until around 9 a.m.
As this situation continues to unfold, updates will be provided as new information becomes available.
