Mets Eye Reunion with Free Agent Starling Marte Amid Mutual Interest

The New York Mets are reportedly exploring the possibility of re-signing outfielder and designated hitter Starling Marte this offseason. Sources indicate that there is mutual interest between Marte and the team, especially given the potential role he could play as a bench asset, serving as a part-time DH and backup outfielder. This arrangement would mirror his contributions from the previous season, particularly after the arrival of right fielder Juan Soto.

Soto has spoken highly of Marte, referring to him as the de facto leader of the Mets. In an interview, Soto emphasized Marte’s pivotal role in fostering team chemistry and energy, stating, “He’s literally the leader of this team — I feel like he’s actually the captain of this team. He’s bringing everybody together.” He further elaborated that Marte’s influence is felt throughout the clubhouse, making him a go-to person for teammates seeking advice or connection.

These leadership qualities may play a significant role in the Mets’ desire to bring Marte back, reinforcing the team’s chemistry as they prepare for the upcoming season. Additionally, the return of Marte would be beneficial for Soto, allowing the two friends to continue their on-field partnership.

Marte, now 37, is coming off a season where he posted a batting average of .270 with a .335 on-base percentage and a .410 slugging percentage, resulting in a .745 OPS. He tallied nine home runs and 34 RBIs across 98 games. However, he has faced challenges with a lingering right knee injury over the past two seasons, which has led to multiple stints on the injured list. After undergoing double groin surgery following the 2022 season, Marte’s performance in 2023 was also compromised, limiting him to just 86 games.

His peak performance came in 2022 when he earned an All-Star selection, achieving a .292 batting average along with 16 home runs and 63 RBIs in 118 games. Marte was initially signed to a four-year, $78 million contract ahead of the 2022 season, and while he currently finds himself entering free agency, there remains a strong possibility that he could return to the Mets this winter.

When healthy, Marte has demonstrated the ability to be a productive player in Major League Baseball, offering valuable right-handed power off the bench. The team’s potential interest in re-signing him not only underscores their focus on on-field performance but also the importance of veteran leadership in their pursuit of success.
