Yankees Eye Trade for Willson Contreras as Goldschmidt Prepares for Free Agency

With Paul Goldschmidt preparing to enter free agency following a brief tenure with the New York Yankees, the organization is contemplating its options for a veteran first baseman as the offseason approaches. Goldschmidt, who primarily held the first base role for much of the past season, saw limited action during the postseason. The Yankees opted for 26-year-old Ben Rice during critical moments, indicating a potential shift in their roster strategy.

As the Yankees assess their first base situation, Bleacher Report’s Kerry Miller has suggested that a trade for St. Louis Cardinals’ former standout, Willson Contreras, could be a viable path forward. Miller noted that the recent trade of Sonny Gray to the Red Sox has escalated discussions around trading both Nolan Arenado and Contreras, framing it as a matter of “when” rather than “if.” While both players hold no-trade clauses, reports indicate that they are more open to waiving these restrictions compared to the previous year.

Contreras, while not as dominant as during his All-Star days with the Chicago Cubs, still put together an impressive season at 33 years old, posting a .257 batting average, a .344 on-base percentage, and recording 20 home runs along with a career-high 80 RBIs. His proven experience could serve as a valuable asset to a Yankees team that has historically favored acquiring seasoned first basemen in their 30s.

In addition, the Yankees boast a surplus of pitching prospects, a factor that could entice the Cardinals. This scenario positions New York favorably, especially considering the opportunity to negotiate a deal that might see the Cardinals retain a substantial portion of Contreras’ $41.5 million remaining contract.

This potential move echoes the Yankees’ decision in 2021 to acquire Anthony Rizzo, who played a significant role at first base through the 2024 season before Goldschmidt was brought on board in 2025. Contreras’ addition could help to further solidify New York’s infield, despite the uncertainties that lie ahead with the Goldschmidt situation. As the hot stove season heats up, all eyes will be on how the Yankees navigate their roster changes and the potential for high-profile trades.
