Arizona State quarterback Sam Leavitt to enter transfer portal after two seasons as starter

Arizona State quarterback Sam Leavitt is making waves in the college football landscape after informing head coach Kenny Dillingham of his intention to enter the transfer portal, as confirmed by sources. This decision follows a two-year stint as the Sun Devils’ starting quarterback, during which Leavitt made a significant impact after transferring from Michigan State.

Last season, Leavitt was instrumental in leading the team to a Big 12 Championship title and a College Football Playoff appearance. He posted impressive stats, throwing for 2,885 yards and 24 touchdowns. However, this season took a different turn for the talented quarterback when a foot injury, which ultimately required surgery, sidelined him. Leavitt managed to appear in only seven games, finishing the season with 1,628 passing yards and 10 touchdowns.

In the wake of his injury setback, local reports emerged indicating that Leavitt did not attend the team’s end-of-season banquet, further fueling speculation about his future. He has yet to disclose whether he plans to declare for the NFL Draft or pursue another year, either with Arizona State or at a different program.

During a recent news conference ahead of the Sun Bowl, Coach Dillingham opted not to dive into Leavitt’s situation directly. “I’m going to leave that to Sam’s team out of respect for him,” said Dillingham. “I love Sam. He grew so much here… Whatever his future holds, I wish him nothing but the best. I absolutely want to see him succeed.” Following the reports surrounding Leavitt entering the transfer portal, Dillingham took to social media platform X to express his support, highlighting Leavitt’s accolades and maintaining confidence in his future endeavors.

As Leavitt prepares to enter the transfer portal, he is expected to attract significant interest and become one of the most sought-after quarterbacks available this offseason, likely attracting multiple offers from programs across the country.

Looking ahead, Arizona State’s quarterback situation may evolve with the arrival of four-star recruit Jake Fette, who is set to join the Sun Devils for his freshman season in 2026. Additionally, former four-star recruit and backup quarterback Cameron Dyer will remain on the roster. Coach Dillingham expressed optimism about the future of the quarterback position at Arizona State, stating, “I’m very, very confident we’re going to have a really good quarterback at Arizona State.”
