In a strategic move to bolster their defensive lineup, the Detroit Lions have claimed veteran safety Jalen Mills off waivers from the Houston Texans, the organization confirmed on Wednesday. The 31-year-old safety’s addition comes as the Lions look to enhance their secondary as the season progresses.
Mills, who was a seventh-round selection in the 2016 NFL Draft, has had a considerable career in the league, appearing in 119 games and making 92 starts across multiple teams, including the Philadelphia Eagles, New England Patriots, New York Jets, and most recently, the Texans. This season, he participated in four games for Houston, earning one starting position while registering a total of four tackles. He was on the field for a combined 48 defensive snaps as well as 31 special teams plays.
To accommodate Mills on the roster, the Lions made the decision to waive tight end Hayden Rucci. Rucci’s departure indicates the team’s intent to streamline their roster in order to make room for Mills, who brings seasoned experience and versatility to the defensive unit.
As the Lions gear up for the continuing season, Mills’ addition is expected to contribute significantly to their efforts on both defense and special teams.
