Lakers to Use Standard Court Against Spurs in NBA Cup Quarterfinals Following Player Concerns

The Los Angeles Lakers are set to host the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA Cup quarterfinals, and in a significant move, they will use their traditional court instead of the bright yellow alternative designated for the tournament. This decision comes in response to player concerns regarding the slippery surface of the specialized Cup court, which had previously been used during a game against the LA Clippers on November 25.

Luka Doncic, a key player for the Lakers, voiced strong criticism of the specialized court, deeming it “dangerous” for players. The feedback from Doncic and other players prompted the Lakers organization and the NBA to reassess the situation. As a precautionary measure and with player safety as a priority, the Lakers chose to revert to their standard court for Wednesday’s matchup.

The NBA had provided the bright yellow Cup courts to all teams as part of its promotional efforts for the ongoing tournament. However, due to the issues experienced, the court was returned to the vendor for repairs. Reports indicate that it was not ready in time for the upcoming game, necessitating the shift back to the standard court.

This decision mirrors that of the Orlando Magic, who also opted for their regular home court during the NBA Cup quarterfinals against the Miami Heat, which they won 117-108. This pattern of prioritizing safety is indicative of the league’s response to player feedback.

Doncic expressed gratitude for the prompt action taken by both the Lakers and the league, stating, “I really appreciate the Lakers and the league. They did us a favor. I was talking about it, so I really appreciate both of them, just changing the court and giving us [a chance to] stay healthy.” Despite his concerns about the playing surface, Doncic is a proponent of the NBA Cup format, likening it to the Copa del Rey from his time in Spain, which he enjoyed.

The outcome of Wednesday’s game will determine who advances to the semifinals, where the winner will take on the victor of the contest between the Oklahoma City Thunder and the Phoenix Suns in Las Vegas on Saturday. The anticipation for the Lakers-Spurs game is high, with fans eagerly awaiting to see which team will advance further in this innovative competition.
