After a hiatus of a season and a half, the popular ABC comedy series Shifting Gears is set to introduce Sam Parker, a character long mentioned but never before seen on screen. Sam is the son of Matt Parker, played by Tim Allen, and the brother of Riley Parker, portrayed by Kat Dennings.
Luke Macfarlane, known for his role in Platonic, has been cast to play Sam, who has been hinted at in previous episodes as a Navy hero. Macfarlane’s appearance is slated for later this season, marking a significant moment for fans eagerly anticipating the character’s debut.
Michelle Nader, the executive producer and showrunner of Shifting Gears, expressed enthusiasm about Sam’s introduction. “We hope to introduce Sam in Season 2,” she shared. “We think he will be another fun casting opportunity and a great character for everyone to complain to!” This statement highlights the show’s intent to deepen its narrative by bringing in a pivotal character who is sure to stir up dynamics within the family.
The series follows Matt Parker, a stubborn widower who manages a classic car restoration shop. The plot thickens when his estranged daughter, Riley, and her children move into his home, leading to both literal and metaphorical restorations in their family dynamics.
The show features a talented ensemble cast including Seann William Scott as Gabriel, Daryl Chill Mitchell as Stitch, Maxwell Simkins as Carter, and Barrett Margolis as Georgia. In addition to his acting role, Tim Allen is also an executive producer on the series, alongside Nader and several notable collaborators.
Macfarlane is currently a series regular on the Apple TV comedy Platonic, which has recently been renewed for a third season. His impressive résumé includes roles in Brothers & Sisters, Killjoys, and Mercy Street, as well as appearances in multiple Hallmark films. Notably, he recently hosted and executive produced the home renovation series Home Is Where the Heart Is for Hallmark+.
Moreover, Macfarlane has added to his filmography with roles in the romantic comedy Bros and the upcoming IFC apocalyptic thriller This Is Not a Test, scheduled for release on February 20.
Shifting Gears airs on Wednesdays at 8 PM on ABC and is available for streaming the following day on Hulu. As audiences await Sam Parker’s on-screen debut, it is clear that the series is set to explore new horizons in its storytelling.
