T.J. Watt Hospitalized with Lung Discomfort, Status for Week 15 in Question

The Pittsburgh Steelers organization is facing uncertainty following the hospitalization of star linebacker T.J. Watt due to lung discomfort experienced during practice at the team’s facility on Wednesday. The team has confirmed that Watt will be sidelined for Thursday’s practice, and his availability for the upcoming Week 15 matchup against the Miami Dolphins remains uncertain.

Head coach Mike Tomlin has indicated that further updates regarding Watt’s condition will be conveyed at an appropriate time, leaving fans and analysts anxiously awaiting more information. The Steelers are set to take on the Dolphins on Monday night, a crucial game as they currently lead the AFC North with a record of 7-6. However, that lead is precarious, with the Baltimore Ravens lurking closely behind at 6-7.

Watt, who is 31 years old, has been a pivotal player for the Steelers this season, participating in all 13 games and recording 53 tackles and seven sacks. Despite having dealt with injuries earlier in his career, he has enjoyed a relatively healthy stretch over the past couple of seasons. Watt played 17 games in consecutive years prior to this season, both of which earned him Pro Bowl selections and recognition as a first-team All-Pro in 2023 after he led the league with 19 sacks.

In July, the Steelers secured Watt with a substantial three-year contract extension worth $123 million, setting the record for the highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history at that time—a title that has since been surpassed by Detroit Lions defensive end Aidan Hutchinson.

The timing of Watt’s absence is particularly critical for Pittsburgh, as they are in a tight race for playoff positioning. Should Watt need to miss additional games, the Steelers will face the challenge of maintaining their top spot in the division without one of their most influential players. Following the Dolphins, Pittsburgh’s schedule includes challenging opponents, with games against the Lions and the Cleveland Browns to conclude the regular season. The team will need to adapt quickly to navigate the pressures of the final stretch without their defensive leader.
