After an extensive development period exceeding two years, Markiplier is poised to make his feature-film directorial debut with the highly anticipated horror sci-fi film “Iron Lung,” slated for theatrical release in late January 2026.
Mark Fischbach, widely known as Markiplier, has taken on multiple roles in this project, serving as producer, writer, director, editor, financier, and lead actor. The film draws inspiration from the 2022 indie horror game of the same name, created by David Szymanski.
In a unique move, Markiplier is self-distributing “Iron Lung,” establishing direct partnerships with independent theaters nationwide. For its opening weekend, which runs from January 30 to February 1, he aims to showcase the film in 50 to 100 independent venues. Tickets for the movie will be made available starting Friday, coinciding with its Los Angeles premiere at the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema Downtown.
As of now, Markiplier has not disclosed specific plans for streaming availability following the film’s theatrical run. The journey to get “Iron Lung” through post-production has proven challenging, taking nearly three years since Mark announced the completion of shooting in an April 2023 video. Alongside Markiplier, the film features notable co-stars including Caroline Rose Kaplan, Troy Baker, and Elsie Lovelock.
In a statement, Markiplier expressed his determination to succeed against skepticism, stating, “They said it shouldn’t be done. Not that it couldn’t be done, people have made movies before, just that it would be ‘woefully unwise’ to tackle writing, directing, acting, and editing a movie myself. Showed them.” He humorously added that his bathroom had been converted into a render farm for the project, and eagerly anticipates audiences experiencing the immense effort poured into the film.
Markiplier holds a world record for the most blood featured in a horror film, a claim he proudly emphasizes. He describes “Iron Lung” as a narrative where “the stars are gone” and “the planets have disappeared,” leaving only the remnants of civilization aboard space stations or starships. This sets the stage for the “Quiet Rapture,” a grim fate that befalls a desperate expedition to explore a blood-filled ocean on a desolate moon known as AT-5.
With over 73 million followers across various digital platforms, including more than 37 million subscribers on YouTube, Markiplier’s influence continues to grow. His video content ranges from entertaining gameplay to immersive interactive films. Additionally, he co-hosts the popular podcasts “Distractible” and “Go! My Favorite Sports Team,” both of which were acquired by Spotify in 2023. Last year, he starred in New Regency’s limited series “The Edge of Sleep” on Amazon Prime Video and features prominently in the Emmy-nominated YouTube original series “In Space with Markiplier.”
Beyond his endeavors in digital content, Markiplier co-founded Cloak, an apparel brand that emphasizes inclusivity and recently collaborated with the Trevor Project, donating part of the proceeds from their limited-edition collection. He is also known for his philanthropic efforts, hosting various live charity events that have raised millions for organizations like Best Friends Animal Society and the Environmental Defense Fund.
Markiplier is represented by Ben Curtis, UTA, and Hansen, Jacobson, Teller, Hoberman, Newman, Warren, Richman, Rush, Kaller, Gellman, Meigs & Fox.
To build excitement for the film, Markiplier released the trailer for “Iron Lung” in October 2023, offering a glimpse into the eerie world he has crafted.
