Apple TV has announced that the popular series Down Cemetery Road, featuring Ruth Wilson and Emma Thompson, will return for a second season. This confirmation comes shortly after the gripping finale of the show’s first season, which Wilson elaborated on during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, hinting at “more juice” to explore in their characters’ journeys.
Star and executive producer Emma Thompson expressed her excitement over the renewal, stating, “I’m so thrilled that Down Cemetery Road has been enjoyed enough to warrant a second season.” She praised her co-star Wilson, calling her the best and most brilliant partner any actor could wish for, and emphasized her eagerness to work again with the creative team, particularly writer Morwenna Banks.
Thompson also described her character, Zoë Boehm, as a “punkishly delicious avatar,” eagerly anticipating donning her character’s iconic style once more. Her gratitude extended to the audience, attributing the show’s renewal to viewer support.
In the upcoming season, viewers can expect Zoë and Sarah, portrayed by Thompson and Wilson, to confront a new and twisted mystery. The plot kicks off when a woman falls in front of a train, leading Zoë to investigate. What initially seems like a straightforward case quickly spirals into chaos as the duo gets drawn into the cutthroat world of black market antiquities. Tensions escalate when they inadvertently cross paths with a relentless serial killer determined to conceal his misdeeds.
Jay Hunt, Apple TV’s creative director for Europe, praised the series, noting that audiences worldwide embraced the dynamic between Zoë and Sarah, enriching the narrative with their distinctive acerbic wit.
Down Cemetery Road is produced by 60Forty Films, with Banks at the helm as head writer, in collaboration with executive producers Jamie Laurenson, Hakan Kousetta, Tom Nash, and Thompson, alongside author Mick Herron, renowned for his work on Slow Horses. Börkur Sigthorsson will be the lead director for the anticipated second season, promising an engaging continuation of an already thrilling storyline.
