South Carolina quarterback LaNorris Sellers is on the verge of finalizing a deal to return to the school for the upcoming 2026 season, according to sources familiar with the situation. Sellers has communicated to his coaching staff that he intends to remain with the Gamecocks for his redshirt junior year, with expectations that an official agreement will be reached shortly.
Standing at 6-foot-3 and weighing 245 pounds, Sellers is currently ranked as the third-best quarterback prospect for the 2026 NFL Draft, according to analyst Mel Kiper. Had he chosen to enter the transfer portal, which opens on January 2, he would have likely attracted significant interest from several programs.
A two-year starter for South Carolina, Sellers has made substantial contributions throughout his tenure, accumulating 5,057 passing yards, 33 touchdowns, and 15 interceptions, alongside 995 rushing yards and 13 additional touchdowns over three seasons. He achieved a notable breakout in 2024, earning the Freshman Offensive Player of the Year accolade from the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) and receiving third-team All-SEC honors. That year was pivotal for the Gamecocks, who secured nine wins and finished No. 19 in the AP Top 25.
However, Sellers’ performance in 2025 was inconsistent, coinciding with a disappointing season for the Gamecocks, who finished with a 4-8 record after starting the year ranked No. 13 in the preseason AP poll. South Carolina struggled offensively, ranking 104th nationally in scoring. Sellers’ quarterback rating placed him 13th among SEC starters, further complicating the team’s season that saw them go 1-7 in league play.
In light of the team’s challenges, head coach Shane Beamer has made significant adjustments to the offensive coaching staff. Recently, he appointed TCU offensive coordinator Kendal Briles to the same position at South Carolina, along with recruiting TCU’s offensive line coach Randy Clements and Penn State’s assistant head coach and running backs coach Stan Drayton to his staff.
These changes could signal a new direction for the Gamecocks as they look to bolster their offensive strategy ahead of the next season, with Sellers expected to play a pivotal role in implementing the new system.
