PSV Eindhoven aims to bounce back against in-form Heracles after Champions League defeat

PSV Eindhoven, fresh from a midweek Champions League setback, returns to Eredivisie action on Saturday with hopes of returning to winning ways against an in-form Heracles side in the 16th gameweek. The Dutch giants faced a disappointing 3-2 defeat to Atletico Madrid earlier this week, a result that snapped their impressive unbeaten streak across all competitions since mid-September.

During that midweek match, PSV took an early lead with a goal from Guus Til just 10 minutes in. However, a tumultuous 20 minutes saw them concede three goals to the Spanish powerhouse, shifting the momentum and leaving the home side trailing. Although Ricardo Pepi found the net in the dying minutes, it was not enough to salvage a point as PSV succumbed to their first defeat since a surprising loss to promoted Telstar in late August.

Despite the Champions League loss, PSV has been a formidable force in the league, going unbeaten in their last 11 Eredivisie matches, with only Ajax managing to stop them from securing maximum points in recent months. They head into this fixture with a six-point cushion at the top of the league, following a nine-match winning streak.

In contrast, Heracles has recently found their form, accumulating 11 points from their last five league matches, making them one of the division’s most competitive teams at present. Under the stewardship of Ernest Faber, following a rocky start to the season, the Almelo side has rebounded remarkably from a grim opening, securing three wins and two draws in their last five outings. This resurgence places them in the relegation playoff spot as they strive for further improvement this weekend.

However, the odds may not be in Heracles’ favor, as they face the daunting challenge of defeating PSV at Philips Stadion—a feat they have not accomplished in 61 years. Their last victory over PSV in Eindhoven dates back to September 2015, highlighting the uphill battle they face.

In terms of personnel, PSV’s lineup appears largely unchanged from the midweek clash, with Ruben van Bommel, Alassane Plea, and Myron Boadu still sidelined. The attacking duo of Guus Til and Ismael Saibari has been pivotal, both contributing significantly to the goal tally this season, while Joey Veerman’s dual threat—as both a scorer and facilitator—adds depth to their offensive arsenal.

For Heracles, they will be without suspended midfielder Jan Zamburek and several key attackers, including Luka Kulenovic, Jeff Reine-Adelaide, and Sem Scheperman due to injuries. Jizz Hornkamp will need to step up in the absence of Kulenovic, as he carries the burden of leading the attack, having scored eight league goals this season.

As the teams prepare to clash, fans are anticipating a thrilling match, with PSV favored to prevail in what promises to be a high-scoring encounter. Predictions suggest a potential score of 4-2 in PSV’s favor, as they look to shake off their European disappointment and maintain their strong league form.
