Lance Gibson Jr. to Make UFC Debut 25 Years After Father

This weekend, UFC Vegas 112 promises to be a memorable event as one lightweight prepares to make history by stepping into the UFC Octagon for the first time. Scheduled for Saturday night, the event will take place at the UFC Apex, closing out the promotion’s calendar for 2025. The main event features a flyweight clash between Manel Kape and Brandon Royval.

Among the notable fighters on the card is popular featherweight Giga Chikadze, who is set to face rising Argentine contender Kevin Vallejos, eager to establish himself within the rankings. However, one of the most significant narratives surrounding UFC Vegas 112 centers on Lance Gibson Jr., who will be making his promotional debut against the well-known Bobby Green.

Gibson Jr.’s entry into the UFC comes nearly 25 years after his father, Lance Gibson Sr., competed in the same promotion. Initially, Gibson Jr.’s fight was not part of the lineup, but it was added just days before the event, with Green stepping in to welcome the Canadian fighter to the Octagon.

Before joining the UFC, Gibson Jr. honed his skills at Muckleshoot Fight Night after parting ways with Bellator in 2022. During his stint in Bellator, he accumulated a record of 5-1 and appeared to be on the brink of a lightweight title opportunity until a setback against Vladimir Tokov shifted his path.

The upcoming debut holds special significance for Gibson Jr., not just for personal achievements but also for family legacy. Almost a quarter-century ago, his father fought at UFC 29, where he achieved a victory over Jermaine Andre but ultimately retired with a professional record of 4-5 after a loss to Evan Tanner.

In reflecting on the timing of his debut and the family connection, Gibson Jr. expressed a deep sense of spirituality, stating, “It’s really crazy… the weird connections are obviously meant to be.” He feels grateful for this opportunity, highlighting the synchronicity of his debut aligning so closely with his father’s history in the promotion.

This milestone marks an important moment in UFC history as Gibson Jr. will become part of a rare group—only the third father-son duo to compete in the promotion. The other notable father-son pairs in UFC history remain to be recognized, showcasing the unique legacy these fighters are carrying forward.

As Gibson Jr. looks to improve upon his father’s UFC record, he faces a challenging opponent in Green, known for his experience and skill inside the Octagon. This fight not only represents a personal aspiration for Gibson Jr. but also contributes to the evolving narrative of family traditions in the world of mixed martial arts.

Fans eagerly await the event’s lineup as history unfolds this Saturday, celebrating both the sport’s past and its future through the incredible journey of the Gibson family.
