Michigan Men's Basketball Set for Conference Matchup at Maryland

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — The University of Michigan men’s basketball team, currently ranked second in the nation, is set to travel to Maryland for an important early December Big Ten conference clash. With a perfect record of 9-0 and an initial conference win under their belts, the Wolverines will take on the Terrapins, who stand at 6-4 and are seeking their first Big Ten victory of the season. The matchup is scheduled to tip off at 8 p.m. and will be broadcast live on Fox, featuring commentary from Tim Brando and Jim Jackson.

Historically, the Wolverines and Terrapins have faced each other 25 times, with Michigan holding a slight edge in the series at 14 wins to Maryland’s 10. Since Maryland joined the Big Ten in 2014, Michigan has won 11 of 18 encounters. The Wolverines recently broke a three-game losing streak against Maryland with a nail-biting 81-80 victory in the Big Ten Tournament semifinals in 2025.

Despite their overall success, Michigan has struggled at the Xfinity Center, where they are 4-7 historically. They’ve experienced mixed results over their last six matchups in College Park, winning two out of the previous four, but have lost their last two games there—64-58 in January 2023 and 64-57 in January 2024. The team’s last victorious outing in Maryland came in December 2020, with a score of 84-73.

This season marks the best start for Michigan since the 2020-21 season, when they won their first 11 games, ultimately leading to a Big Ten title and a journey to the Elite Eight. The Wolverines have demonstrated impressive dominance, winning their last six games by margins of 25 points or more. Notably, three of these victories were by 40 points or greater, with two against teams ranked in the top 25. According to research from the Associated Press, no team has recorded such a streak of victories with a margin of 25+ points and multiple ranked wins in a season since 1995-96.

Rebounding has been a particular strength for Michigan, as they have surpassed 40 rebounds in every game and amassed a high of 53 rebounds during a game against Villanova. They currently rank third in the nation for rebounds per game at 46.5 and lead in defensive rebounds, averaging 34.6 per game.

The Wolverines’ frontcourt trio, consisting of Yaxel Lendeborg, Morez Johnson Jr., and Aday Mara, has been pivotal to the team’s offensive success, contributing over 40% of the scoring load with a combined production of 38.0 points per game. Specifically, Lendeborg scores an average of 15.0 points, Johnson adds 13.4, and Mara contributes 9.6. Overall, Michigan’s offense is averaging an impressive 94.0 points per game.

In recent performances, Johnson has emerged as a particularly efficient scorer, shooting 79.3% (23-for-29) from the field over his last four games, and has recently made the first two three-pointers of his career against Rutgers. He leads the Big Ten in field goal percentage, sitting at 68.1% nationally.

Mara has also made significant contributions defensively, leading the team with 25 blocks, averaging 2.78 blocks per game—a ranking that places him ninth nationally. He has consistently registered at least one block in every game and has a team-leading 8.9 rebounds per game, with numerous standout performances this season.

Elliot Cadeau, a key playmaker for the Wolverines, averages 5.7 assists per game and has demonstrated improvement with a remarkable 30:7 assist-to-turnover ratio over his last five contests. This comes as a positive transformation after he had committed 14 turnovers during his first four games.

Roddy Gayle Jr., serving as the Sixth Man, has shot 56.1% from the field and has quietly made a significant impact, averaging 11 points per game with six double-figure scoring performances. Meanwhile, Trey McKenney leads the Wolverines with 20 three-pointers made this season, averaging 11.1 points.

Michigan has maintained a balanced rotation, with seven players averaging between 18 and 22 minutes per game, while Lendeborg leads with an average of 27 minutes on the floor. As the Wolverines head to Maryland, they aim to continue their unbeaten streak and capture another critical conference win.
