Jarry Takes Over as Starting Goaltender for Oilers After Strong Season Performance

In a promising start to the season, goaltender Tristan Jarry has made a significant impact for the Pittsburgh Penguins. The former WHL champion with the Edmonton Oil Kings, who clinched the title in 2014, has posted a record of 9-3-1 in 14 games, including 13 starts. Jarry boasts an impressive 2.66 goals-against average, a .909 save percentage, and has recorded one shutout, effectively bouncing back after facing challenges last season.

Jarry’s strong performance this year has been a part of a remarkable turnaround. He kicked off the season with five wins in his first six starts and added two more victories in his first nine appearances. This consistent success has reinforced the confidence of the Penguins’ management team, particularly General Manager Kyle Bowman, who had targeted Jarry as a key contributor to strengthen the team’s goaltending position.

Bowman commented on Jarry’s performance, emphasizing the extensive work done to evaluate and secure a reliable goaltender. “We’ve done a lot of work on this position. Obviously, it gets a lot of attention,” he stated. He highlighted Jarry’s solid track record as a starter, noting, “He’s been very good on those metrics for many years and on a large sample size.” This season’s impressive statistics underscore Jarry’s comeback and ability to deliver when it matters most.

As the Penguins prepare for a series of games, Jarry is set to take over as the starter, stepping in for Stuart Skinner. The 24-year-old Skinner, who has been with the Oilers for eight seasons and was a third-round pick from Edmonton in 2017, has been a key player for the team, leading them to two consecutive Stanley Cup Final appearances.

In addition to Jarry’s transition, the situation around the Oilers has caught attention due to the impending free agency of several players, including Skinner and Brett Kulak. Kulak, a local talent from Stony Plain, has been a fixture in the Oilers’ lineup since being acquired from the Canadiens at the 2022 Trade Deadline, having never missed a game over parts of five seasons. He has participated in every single one of the 370 regular-season and playoff games during his time with the team.

With the season progressing, attention will be focused on how Jarry continues to execute his role as a starter in the Penguins’ net and the implications of impending contract changes for both Skinner and Kulak as they navigate their futures in the league.
