Heisman Trophy Finalists Announced Ahead of 91st Ceremony

On Saturday night, college football fans will eagerly await the announcement of the 91st Heisman Trophy winner, featuring a competitive lineup of four finalists: Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza, Ohio State quarterback Julian Sayin, Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavia, and Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love. Each finalist has played a crucial role in leading their teams to impressive double-digit win records this season.

Mendoza and Sayin are particularly notable this year as both quarterbacks earned their positions in the College Football Playoff following Indiana’s recent victory in the Big Ten Championship game against Ohio State. This triumph not only secured a championship for Indiana but also propelled the Hoosiers to the No. 1 seed in the playoffs, granting them a valuable first-round bye.

In an intriguing twist, former Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel has resurfaced in discussions related to this year’s Heisman race. A recent analysis from Bleacher Report showcased comparisons between his historic 2012 season and the remarkable rushing statistics of Notre Dame’s Jeremiyah Love, who has emerged as a strong contender for the award. Manziel’s standout 2012 campaign featured 3,706 passing yards alongside 26 touchdown passes, complemented by an extraordinary 1,410 rushing yards and 21 touchdowns on 201 carries, averaging a remarkable seven yards per carry.

In comparison, Love, primarily focused on rushing and receiving duties, tallied 1,372 rushing yards and 18 touchdowns on 199 carries, averaging 6.9 yards per attempt. While this comparison underscores Love’s impressive season, it also highlights the enduring legacy of Manziel’s Heisman-winning performance, which is often cited alongside former Auburn quarterback Cam Newton’s unforgettable 2010 season as one of the most remarkable in Heisman history.

Texas A&M’s Marcel Reed, who had an impressive season with 2,932 passing yards and 25 touchdowns, unfortunately did not make the cut for this year’s Heisman finalists.

As fans gear up for Saturday’s announcement, it remains to be seen who will take home college football’s most coveted trophy, further enriching the storied legacy of this prestigious award.
