Desmond Howard Sparks Texas Coaching Speculation Following Michigan's Moore Firing

In a season already marked by a notable series of coaching changes, the speculation surrounding Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian has intensified following significant developments at Michigan. Desmond Howard’s recent comments suggested that the Texas job may become vacant, raising eyebrows in college football circles.

Howard’s foresight came on November 17, when he hinted via social media that Texas could find itself in search of a new head coach after the season. “Don’t be surprised if that Texas job opens up,” he stated, indicating that there might be a “mutual parting of ways” rather than a direct firing. Many interpreted this as a nod toward Sarkisian’s job security, given the substantial financial implications of contemplating his dismissal.

The discourse took on a new dimension with Michigan’s decision to part ways with Sherrone Moore, the team’s former offensive coordinator, who was let go due to personal conduct issues shortly after the signing day. While Sarkisian’s name hasn’t been prominently linked with a move to Michigan, the hiring winds may inadvertently create opportunities elsewhere, specifically for Alabama—where Kalen DeBoer, a highly regarded coaching candidate, could be targeted by Michigan, potentially triggering a chain reaction affecting Sarkisian’s future.

Although Sarkisian’s past in Tuscaloosa under Nick Saban might prove tempting, he is currently not seen as a leading contender for the Michigan position, with other candidates reportedly higher on the list. The speculation now shifts to the possibility of Alabama seeking Sarkisian should DeBoer leave Washington for Michigan, casting a shadow of uncertainty over the Texas program.

As Howard has suggested and pundits have theorized, Sarkisian’s potential departure would not be a firing scenario but rather a mutual understanding that the two sides might benefit from a fresh start. Social media reactions have captured this idea, with fans and analysts discussing the ongoing turmoil in the coaching landscape and its effect on various programs.

The Michigan decision certainly adds another layer to the offseason’s coaching carousel, and while Sarkisian’s immediate future remains uncertain, the implications of Moore’s ousting resonate far beyond Ann Arbor. The coming weeks will be critical as various schools evaluate their leadership needs and attempt to make strategic hires to position themselves for future success. The college football community is left to ponder how these shifts will ultimately play out, making for an intriguing narrative as the offseason unfolds.
