Rob Gronkowski hints at possibility of returning from retirement, but odds are slim

In a recent interview with NFL Network, Rob Gronkowski hinted at the possibility of returning to the field, albeit with a disclaimer that the chance is slim—“1 percent” to be precise. The comment came in the wake of fellow veteran quarterback Philip Rivers signing with the Indianapolis Colts’ practice squad, making a potential return to play against the Seattle Seahawks this Sunday after a two-year hiatus from the game.

Gronkowski remarked that joining a practice squad isn’t the worst idea he’s ever heard. “I would maybe go back if a team was like, ‘Hey, can you give us some great looks on the scout team?’” he explained. The former tight end mentioned a hypothetical scenario where a team would offer a substantial bonus, around a million dollars, in exchange for his participation in practice sessions. “Just go out there and practice and have fun and get our guys better. That actually might be a pretty cool case,” he added, while emphasizing the very low likelihood of such an opportunity arising.

Although Gronkowski’s tone was laced with humor, he has a history of surprising fans and the league. His connection with Tom Brady played a significant role in his previous return to professional football in 2020, when he joined the Buccaneers after Brady made his move from the New England Patriots. Their partnership was fruitful, culminating in a Super Bowl victory where Gronkowski caught two touchdown passes in a decisive win over the Kansas City Chiefs.

The tight end officially retired earlier this year, signing a one-day contract to close the chapter as a New England player. His impressive career spanned 11 seasons, mainly with the Patriots, and included four Super Bowl championships and 92 touchdown receptions.

Gronkowski is not the only player to consider a comeback after retirement. The landscape of the NFL has seen several high-profile players, including Brett Favre and Randy Moss, return to action after stepping away from the game. Hall of Fame quarterback Kurt Warner expressed similar sentiments during a recent podcast appearance, mentioning that had the Cardinals reached out, he might have entertained the idea of a comeback as well.

As the league continues to evolve, Gronkowski’s lighthearted comments serve as a reminder that the door to return may never be fully closed for those who can still make an impact on the field.
