Both running back Chris Rodriguez and wide receiver Deebo Samuel are listed as questionable ahead of the upcoming game against the New York Giants. Rodriguez has been managing a groin injury, missing Wednesday’s practice but returning with limited participation on both Thursday and Friday. In contrast, Samuel was added to the injury report on Friday due to an illness and was excused from practice.
Rodriguez, a sixth-round draft pick in 2023, has stepped up as the Commanders’ primary running back in recent weeks. He has averaged 4.6 yards per carry over 11 games this season, with increased usage following the team’s Week 9 matchup against the Seattle Seahawks. In his last five games, Rodriguez has led the team with 253 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 54 carries.
If Rodriguez is unable to play on Sunday, the Commanders have several alternatives. Veteran Jeremy McNichols, who averages 6.6 yards per carry and contributes as a pass-catcher, could fill the role. Jacory Croskey-Merritt, although his playing time has decreased lately, offers quickness and vision as a runner. Furthermore, Chase Edmonds, who was brought onto the active roster after Zach Ertz’s season-ending ACL injury, presents another option. Over his seven-year career, Edmonds has accumulated 1,972 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns on 450 carries.
Samuel has been one of the Commanders’ key offensive threats this season, and his absence could lead to increased responsibilities for rookie Jaylin Lane, who has tallied 16 receptions for 225 yards thus far.
On the injury front, the Commanders will be without three players for Sunday’s contest: cornerback Jonathan Jones (rib), quarterback Jayden Daniels (left elbow), and defensive end Drake Jackson (groin/knee). Daniels’s absence was anticipated after head coach Dan Quinn ruled him out on Wednesday. Jackson, recently activated from Injured Reserve, is still in recovery after signing with the Commanders earlier this season.
Jones did not practice throughout the week, raising concerns about the team’s depth at cornerback. The secondary has already faced significant challenges, losing starters Marshon Lattimore and rookie Trey Amos. In their current situation, the Commanders will likely rely on Mike Sainristil, Noah Igbinoghene, and Antonio Hamilton Sr. to fill the gaps in their defensive lineup.
The Commanders’ final injury report for the week highlights these critical concerns as they prepare for their upcoming matchup.
