The Jaguars’ defense presents a formidable challenge, boasting the top rush defense in the NFL, allowing only 82.9 yards per game. Furthermore, they have yet to permit any opponent to surpass the 100-yard mark in rushing this season. Their aggressive style of play has propelled them to rank tied for second in both takeaways and interceptions, with a remarkable total of 23 takeaways and 15 interceptions. Linebacker Devin Lloyd has emerged as a standout performer, recording five interceptions, while edge rusher Josh Hines-Allen leads the team with seven sacks. Veteran linebacker Foye Oluokon continues to excel, consistently piling up tackles.
Head Coach Aaron Glenn praised the defensive unit’s performance, highlighting their collective aggression and ability to pressure opposing quarterbacks, which contributes to their impressive turnover statistics. “They’re doing a hell of a job,” Glenn stated. “And it’s not just the interceptions; it’s the fumbles also. They have an attacking style that really puts a lot of pressure on the quarterback, which obviously allows for those picks to happen. This season has been one for Lloyd, who has really taken it to another level.”
Cook’s journey this season has been marked by significant learning experiences as he served primarily as the scout team quarterback. After a challenging outing against the Miami Dolphins, where he completed 14 of 30 passes for 163 yards with two interceptions, Cook is poised for a more significant role with a full week of practice as the starting QB.
Defensive tackle Harrison Phillips expressed confidence in Cook’s abilities, emphasizing his skills as a natural passer. “He made some unbelievable throws against us in some of the carded scout team periods this season,” Phillips remarked. “He’s made it difficult on our secondary, just giving fantastic looks all season long. So, I definitely know that he can throw the football and make the right reads.”
As the game approaches, the weather in Jacksonville is expected to be warm, with temperatures in the low 70s. The Jets’ coaching staff is preparing for the heat that defensive coordinator Anthony Campanile is likely to bring against the rookie quarterback. Offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand commented on the likelihood of facing a high-pressure defense. “Historically, some defensive coordinators say, ‘Hey, we’re going to heat the young kid up and see what he’s made of,’” Engstrand noted. “So, we’re prepared for that and for whatever else they’ve shown on tape.”
