Patriots' Robert Spillane Active for Key Week 15 Matchup Against Bills

As the New England Patriots prepare for their crucial matchup against the Buffalo Bills, captain Robert Spillane has emerged as a significant player on the injury report. After a bye week in Week 14, Spillane has been officially declared active for the game, which is particularly vital for New England’s run defense. The team faces a formidable challenge against the Bills’ rushing attack, spearheaded by standout running back James Cook.

In addition to Spillane’s return, the Patriots’ roster has received a boost with the activation of nose tackle Khyiris Tonga, left guard Jared Wilson, and special teams standout Brenden Schooler, all returning from injuries. Spillane, who had been limited due to a foot issue and played only 69.1% of the defensive snaps in the previous game, is expected to take on a large role again. Known for his significant impact, Spillane’s stats indicate a substantial improvement in the team’s defense when he is on the field, allowing only -0.03 expected points added per rush compared to +0.05 without him.

The Bills arrive at the game ranked seventh in rush expected points added, with Cook notably leading the league in rushing yards. In their earlier encounter in Week 5, the Patriots successfully limited Cook’s success, which was pivotal for their victory. Spillane’s workload will be monitored closely, as the Patriots hope to exploit his leadership and defensive skills against a potent offensive line.

With Spillane’s effectiveness under scrutiny, the Patriots may rely on additional players like Jack Gibbens and Christian Elliss to fortify their defense. The return of Tonga, a heavyweight presence in the middle, is also expected to significantly bolster the team’s run-stopping capabilities.

On the offensive side, rookie Jared Wilson’s return offers a much-needed enhancement to the offensive line, which will see its fourth different combination of the season. Wilson is anticipated to reclaim a starting role at left guard after a brief absence due to an ankle injury. The projected offensive line includes Vederian Lowe at left tackle, Wilson at left guard, Garrett Bradbury at center, Mike Onwenu at right guard, and Morgan Moses at right tackle.

The running back situation has shifted with the absence of Terrell Jennings due to a concussion. D’Ernest Johnson, signed to the active roster, is set to back up the primary running backs, Rhamondre Stevenson and TreVeyon Henderson. Johnson’s experience in special teams makes him a fitting choice to replace Jennings, who has been placed on injured reserve.

New England’s quarterback, Drake Maye, will have access to a complete roster of skill position players, including key contributors at wide receiver and tight end as they look to match up against the Bills’ high-powered offense led by quarterback Josh Allen.

Meanwhile, the Buffalo Bills will welcome back defensive end Joey Bosa and right tackle Spencer Brown from injuries, although they will be without cornerback Christian Benford and linebacker Terrel Bernard. Benford, who logged significant contributions in their last game, will be sorely missed, particularly as he was expected to cover key targets like Patriots wideout Stefon Diggs.

A victory for the Patriots would not only be pivotal for their season but could also mark a significant shift in the AFC East, potentially dethroning the Bills, who have held the divisional crown for five consecutive years. New England last won the AFC East during Tom Brady’s final season with the team, making this matchup particularly significant for first-year head coach Mike Vrabel, as they look to rewrite the narrative after a couple of challenging seasons.

The highly anticipated game between the Patriots and the Bills is set to kick off at 1 p.m. ET at Gillette Stadium.
