Panthers Aim for Playoff Berth with Key Matchup Against Saints

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — In a pivotal moment for the Carolina Panthers, head coach Dave Canales rested early Thursday night and missed witnessing the Atlanta Falcons’ remarkable comeback against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, which saw them rally from a 14-point deficit in the fourth quarter to seal a 29-28 victory. This result places Carolina, now with a record of 7-6, just two wins away from making the playoffs for the first time since 2017.

Despite the advantageous development, Canales remains intent on treating Sunday’s matchup against the New Orleans Saints with utmost seriousness. While Tampa Bay currently sits at 7-7 following their loss, the coach knows that any aspirations for the postseason could quickly diminish if the Panthers were to suffer a second defeat to the Saints this season, given New Orleans’ current record of 3-10.

“It’s the same process we’ve had all year: Every game is a championship opportunity,” Canales stated on Friday, emphasizing the importance of maintaining focus against a historically tough opponent. He framed the upcoming game as a chance for the team to showcase their best performance yet.

A win against New Orleans could also set Carolina on a path to clinch the NFC South title. Should they secure victory on Sunday and follow it with a win over the Buccaneers the following week, the Panthers would finish with four division wins compared to Tampa Bay’s maximum of three. This scenario would serve as a critical tiebreaker should the teams end up even in future matchups.

However, Canales is adamant about not overlooking the Saints, who handed the Panthers a surprising 17-7 defeat just a month ago at Bank of America Stadium—an encounter that marked only New Orleans’ second win of the season. The messaging within the team has been consistent, with players and coaches alike using the term “mature energy” as they head into this critical game, emphasizing the need for focus and respect for the challenge ahead.

“Just a really focused group, excited group, obviously, with this opportunity we have in front of us to go down there and play against the Saints,” Canales noted, following what he described as a productive practice on what he dubbed “Focus Friday.”

In terms of roster updates, the Panthers are poised to be at full strength for the first time in months, an encouraging sign as they prepare for the Saints. The return of Pro Bowl cornerback Jaycee Horn from concussion protocol is particularly significant, given Carolina’s struggles in their previous matchup against New Orleans—where they surrendered 282 passing yards and two touchdowns to rookie quarterback Tyler Shough.

Horn himself is not surprised by Carolina’s playoff aspirations. He had previously encouraged fans to “jump on the bandwagon while you can” after a win in Munich last season. Reflecting on their current position ahead of the Saints matchup, Horn reiterated the importance of maintaining focus: “It’s just a blessing,” he remarked. “We’ve still got to focus on going 1-0 every week, every day, really.”
