AI technology is increasingly making its presence felt on trading floors, transitioning from mere analytical software to active agents capable of executing trades, negotiating deals, and managing capital flows on decentralized systems. This evolution promises not only quicker transactions but also the development of innovative financial products and a broader range of investment opportunities for institutional crypto desks.

However, this new landscape introduces significant challenges, particularly regarding accountability. In a scenario where two AI agents might negotiate a derivatives contract yet record differing amounts—$100 million on one side and $120 million on the other—the question arises: who holds responsibility when such discrepancies lead to failures or regulatory scrutiny? This situation is not hypothetical; it reflects the complexities of the current agentic financial era, in which AI operates within systems where even minor errors can pose systemic risks.

Moreover, a distinct risk emerges: the potential for these AI systems to act upon incomplete or unverifiable data, resulting in harmful consequences. For instance, a recent incident involving a UK healthcare AI system, which misdiagnosed a patient by referencing a non-existent hospital, underscores the critical need for robust verification mechanisms as we evolve beyond basic automation.

To build a reliable and effective agentic framework, three foundational layers are essential:

  1. Decentralized Infrastructure: Such a structure removes single points of failure and fosters resilience and scalability, ensuring that operations do not depend on individual private entities.

  2. Trust Layer: This layer integrates verifiability, identity, and consensus at the protocol level, facilitating trustworthy transactions across various jurisdictions.

  3. Verified, Reliable AI Agents: These agents must enforce systems that allow for provenance, attestations, and accountability, ensuring ongoing auditability and enabling them to operate on behalf of their users.

For AI agents to function effectively in shared environments, they require three critical components:

  • Consensus: A collective agreement on events and transactions.
  • Provenance: An understanding of who initiated and influenced actions, as well as who endorsed them.
  • Auditability: The ability to trace every step of a process with ease.

Without these elements, AI agents could behave unpredictably across disparate systems, which could lead to catastrophic failures, especially considering their constant operational status.

For enterprises transitioning into this agentic era, building systems characterized by transparency, auditability, and resilience is paramount. Policymakers are urged to support open-source networks as the foundation of trustworthy AI environments. Meanwhile, industry leaders and innovators must prioritize embedding trust within the overall framework, rather than attempting to integrate it retroactively.

The future of the agentic era is set to be more than just automated processes; it holds the potential for negotiation, composability, and accountability—provided that efforts are made to design these systems from the ground up with trust as a core principle.
